The Special Vocational Junior-Senior High School of Trikala is one of the two Special Education schools in the area. It is a newly founded school and its life spans just a school year. That is why it is a small school with 25 Greek and immigrant students aged 13-20 years old. Our school is of Secondary Vocational educational level and consists of a 4 years’ High School based on the National Educational curriculum and a 4 years’ Agricultural Vocational Technical school for mentally disabled children. For the next academic year, we are expecting to obtain the accreditation on specialization of ICT.Our students face mostly light mental retardation, autism, selective mutism, physical disabilities, mental immaturity and specific learning difficulties.Most students live either in the city of Trikala or outside in villages. Many of them come from a deprived social and economic background and are not given many opportunities for a broader education. The teaching staff comprise 20 teachers-all highly specialized in the Special Education field. Also,the school has aSEN supportive teacher, a social worker, a psychologist and a physiotherapist. Many of them hold a postgraduate degree and are fluent speakers of at least one foreign language. They are computer literate as ICT use is an indispensable part of the teaching process. Being aware of the importance of learner involvement in school projects, they organise environmental, cultural, health education and professional guidance programmes and support innovative actions.
