Ölyckeskolan is a primary school located in Löberöd, a village in the countryside of Southern Sweden in the municipality of Eslöv. The school consists of two parts – elementary school with 255 students in ages 6 to10 and secondary school with 166 students from ages 13 to16. Our school is a workplace for 35 qualified teachers. Most of our students are transported to school by the school bus, which limits opportunities for after-school activities. Furthermore students from three neighbouring schools continue their secondary school’s education here.
Most of the students in Ölyckeskolan have Swedish as their mother tongue; however a few foreign languages are spoken here as well. Löberöd’s population represents traditional values and the possibility to meet immigrants and to be influenced by other cultures is smaller here than in bigger cities in our municipality. A variety of social problems and substance abuse are represented within the area, which affects many students’ school situation. Many students are disadvantaged by writing and reading difficulties, diagnosed dyslexia, ADHD and autism. Increasing those students’ opportunities to be successful in school is a very important task for our teachers. We feel that working out new methods, bringing out and exchanging experience within special educational needs area is one of the most important topics for the school today.
Since social and cultural understanding and acceptance for other cultures is of crucial importance for a successful participation in the modern society it is important to give both students and the staff experience of European cooperation.
We want to take part in this strategic partnership because we are expecting a positive impact on our staff and students involved. It would be an important step towards better education for our disadvantaged students since by improving teachers´ skills we can significant increase SEN-students chances to be successful in school.
The main idea of this project is working against early leaving, exclusion and disadvantages in youth. There are the objectives our organization has always prioritized as well. Teachers at our school together with Students' social welfare staff (EHT) emphasize the importance of creating a good and functioning school environment based on trust to make our students successful in school and in their future lives. We feel however, that this work needs to be carried within a wider context i.e. Strategic Partnership like this. The staff and students at Ölyckeskolan are looking forward to be part of this cooperation. Our organization has recently participated in EU project which bring us a lot of good experience. We would like to implement this knowledge by starting a new Strategic Partnership in our school.
